Geography

At Marlborough St Mary’s, we offer a vibrant, inclusive curriculum that welcomes every child. Our hands-on, cross-curricular approach fosters curiosity, creativity, and resilience in a nurturing environment rooted in Christian values. We aim to build independence and a love of learning through a challenging, progressive curriculum that connects knowledge to real life—preparing pupils to thrive as active members of our community and the wider world.

Our Geography Intent

Our Geography curriculum helps children make sense of the world around them. Pupils explore their local area of Marlborough, as well as places across Britain and beyond, developing an understanding of both physical and human geography. They learn how people and environments are connected, and what it means to care for the planet and one another.

We aim to inspire curiosity and a sense of wonder. Children are encouraged to ask questions, use geographical vocabulary confidently, and share their ideas through discussion and enquiry. All learners, including those who are disadvantaged, receive the support and enrichment needed to access high-quality geography experiences.

What Makes a Marlborough St Mary’s Geographer?

  • A curious and reflective learner, proud of their work.

  • Knowledgeable about places, people, and environments.

  • Aware of how the world is connected and interdependent.

  • Confident in using geographical vocabulary and fieldwork skills.

Guided by our school values of Read, Talk, Community, and Joy, our Geography curriculum empowers every child to explore, question, and engage with their world.

Implementation

We build strong foundations in key vocabulary and help children use it to explain their understanding. Teachers bring Geography to life through real-world contexts and hands-on experiences. For example, KS1 pupils study local maps before exploring Marlborough, developing pride in their community.

Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum with clear progression in skills and knowledge, ensuring each lesson builds on the last. High-quality resources and targeted support ensure every pupil, whatever their background, can access and enjoy learning about the world.

Impact

By the time they leave Marlborough St Mary’s, our pupils:

  • Have a strong knowledge of places locally, nationally, and globally.

  • Use geographical vocabulary and enquiry skills with confidence.

  • Are curious, caring, and proud of their world.

  • Understand how they can help protect and enjoy their environment.

We celebrate Geography through pupil voice, displays, and learning outcomes, ensuring all children develop the curiosity, confidence, and sense of connection that will last a lifetime.
